Ramel Declares Victory in 40th LD Election

With more than 76.5% of the vote after the election night tallies, Representative Alex Ramel has declared victory in the election in the 40th District race for position 2. While many more ballots remain to be counted, Ramel’s early lead is large enough that late returns are vanishingly unlikely to change the outcome. Ramel is running for reelection after being appointed at the beginning of 2020, and winning his first election in fall of 2020.

“I’m humbled and honored that the voters continue to trust me to represent our community’s priorities like building affordable housing, addressing the climate crisis, rebuilding reliable ferry service, and ensuring reproductive freedom,” said Ramel.

During the primary, this election drew regional (here and here) and national headlines after a political action committee with ties to fossil fuel interests targeted the race with a six-figure independent expenditure. That tactic apparently did little to persuade voters, and likely even backfired because Ramel’s campaign saw a big increase in small-dollar donations, volunteers, and endorsements after the PAC’s involvement was reported in early July. After Ramel garnered 73.2% of the vote in the primary, outside support for his opponent dried up.

Ramel and Smith are both Democrats, and Rep. Ramel is committed to bringing people together. “I’ve reached out to ask Trevor for his advice several times a year since I started in this role. I’m going to continue making those calls and I hope he will keep answering and providing me with honest feedback,” said Ramel.

This is a strong night for Democrats in Washington. There are many ballots left to count, but the predicted republican surge is nowhere on the horizon. If anything, Republicans appear likely to lose seats in the legislature,” said Ramel. “Voters are making it clear that they want reproductive freedom. They trust Democrats to address the cost of living and especially housing. They want science to guide our climate and energy policy. A strong democratic majority is a mandate for us to deliver for the people.”

The 40th district includes southwest Whatcom County, northwest Skagit county and all of San Juan county, including parts of Bellingham, Burlington and Mount Vernon as well as all of Friday Harbor and Anacortes.
