Ramel Declares Victory in General Election

With more than 73% of the vote after the election night tallies, Representative Alex Ramel has declared victory over Republican Russ Dzialo in the general election in the 40th District race for Position 2. This is Alex’s first election after being appointed to a partial term in January of this year.

“I’m grateful and humbled to be asked to represent this community’s values in our state government,” said Alex shortly after results were released. “When we begin the next legislative session we will have many challenges in front of us, and it means a lot to me to know that as we are making those difficult choices, so many in this community trust that I’ll be working for them.”

Ramel’s victory in the 40th district comes on a night when there are many hotly contested races in nearby districts and around the state.

This is a strong night for Democrats in Washington. There are many ballots left to count, but Democratic challengers are competitive in a dozen districts that just two years ago were out of reach and ahead in many of them,” said Ramel.  “Voters are making it clear that they want a careful, science-based approach to protecting public health. They want us to solve the budget crisis without deep cuts to our social safety net, and they want us to respond to calls for racial justice with systemic change. A strong democratic majority is a mandate for us to deliver.”

The 40th district includes southwest Whatcom County, northwest Skagit county and all of San Juan county, including parts of Bellingham, Burlington and Mount Vernon as well as all of Friday Harbor and Anacortes.
